HOUSING COMMITTEE Español
The Housing Committee’s goal is to preserve the affordability of Brighton Park and prevent displacement of longtime neighborhood residents. BPNC’s Housing Committee is working to increase homeownership, preserve affordable housing, reform the property tax system, increase housing services and promote balanced, accountable development.
Accountable Development
Recently local aldermen and the Chicago Community Development Commission voted to approve the Stevenson/Brighton TIF in an effort to help fund the construction of 3 new schools, significant residential development and other business and community improvement projects. BPNC is working to educate community residents about the TIF and work with stakeholders to ensure that the community is involved in all decisions regarding the prioritization and allocation of TIF dollars.
Homeownership Education Program
BPNC’s Housing Committee launched its Home buyer Education Program in an effort to decrease foreclosure rates and provide financial education and support services to first time home buyers and current homeowners. Click here for a complete list of our services.
BPNC believes that the most effective strategies to preserve affordability and create neighborhood stability are through the development and implementation of systemic changes that benefit not only Brighton Park, but the city as a whole.
Balanced Development Coalition
As a member of the Balanced Development Coalition (BDC) worked with community groups from around the city to develop and build support for a citywide inclusionary housing/set-aside ordinance. On May 14th, the city council voted to expand the Affordable Requirements Ordinance to require residential developments of 10 or more units in which the developers receive city funding assistance to include affordable units.
Tax Reform Action Coalition
BPNC is working with TRAC to reform the property tax system in Illinois, making it fair and predictable for all property owners and enabling low and moderate income families to remain in their neighborhoods. The goals of the coalition are to educate our communities and elected officials about the need for significant property tax reform, to encourage our elected representatives to enact legislation that improves the way properties are assessed and to promote stability and balanced development in our communities.
