YOUTH COUNCIL                                                                  Español
Where you have the power to change our community

The Brighton Park Youth Council was created to provide a positive outlet for the youth of the community to express their concerns and take action to make their community better. We believe by empowering our youth we are helping to create a stronger future for Brighton Park.

What are the Youth Council's Goals?

  • To educate youth about issues in the community
  • To make a difference in the community
  • To create a safer space for youth
  • To change what we believe is wrong
  • To have a youth-led, youth-created space
  • To work towards social justice

What can you do at the Youth Council?

  • Learn leadership skills
  • Learn about the stuff affecting your life and your community and what you can do about it
  • Change your community and make your voice heard
  • Meet other youth
  • Have fun and get support

What kind of groups/activities does youth council offer?

  • Gay Straight Alliance: a safe space for lgbtq youth and straight allies, to get support and to make the community and schools better places for lgbtq youth, free of homophobia and hatred.
  • Girls Group: a safe space for girls and young women in the community to talk about the issues affecting their lives and make change. Some of the issues the Girls Group has worked on are: violence against girls and the media and the el Proyecto Virgen de Guadalupe, looking at the impact of la Virgen on the lives of Latina girls
  • Anti-Zero Tolerance Committee: for youth who are tired of seeing youth treated like criminals in their schools and want to do something about it
  • Youth Speaks and Open Mics: use your voice, share your opinions and thoughts and talents
  • Other ideas: a campaign to get better sex education in your high school, field trips, book club, art classes or creative writing classes, self-defense classes…

Why should I get involved in youth council?

  • To make the youth voice stronger
  • To get informed
  • Leadership skills
  • Lifelong lessons for future references
  • You want your voice to be heard
  • You want a place where you get to make decisions that affect you and your community
  • Where you can be with friends and make new ones
